Nixon and apron are two words I wouldn't consider putting together. But here they are, in this amazing concept from HeideGear, a shop created from two philosophy students. They playfully mix philosophic concepts with irony (with some good old absurdism thrown in) and the results are amazing!

The Nixon apron is great, but have a look at this magazine-like poster! The references in the titles are priceless. Their artwork is one of the coolest things ever made out of the crooked timber of humanity!

Yesterday I saw this magnificent invitation, with the onion peel photograph and the epic No Sex Today motto. On the back it simply says "customize me". Yes, it's a customizable invitation but I wouldn't change a thing: the photo, the motto and the "customize me" proposal form a splendidly absurd -yet, artful- concept.

Yeah, I know, there are people who think that Monty Python is the used-to-be-geek-but-is-so-mainstream-now kind of thing but I think that's silly. The designs and illustrations of Tuomas Ikonen have a quality I really admire. Apart from being gorgeous, they seem to embrace the product they are applied to. Many times I come upon interesting artwork that seems to be thrown upon stuff, while Tuomas's work uses carefully the format of each product. Hence, his creations -like this iPad case with the old metalhead listening to Slayer!- have a distinct personality and character.

Besides, on this day, 27th March 1968, this pioneer cosmonaut died when his training jet crashed. Being a space buff I can't help but feeling nostalgic for this era of cold war giants. Tiny people living their everyday lives in the surreal background of our own world. The poetry hidden in the paradoxical images of Slinkachu's art astonished me.

Our eyes and hopes are focused on Japan and the stricken but courageous Japanese people that face yet another danger: the nuclear crisis at Fukushima. There is a race against time going on and I'm optimistic that they will succeed in avoiding further disaster. The situation is still considered grave but they have begun injecting freshwater into the reactor cores.

Unfortunately, three workers of the plant were exposed to highly radioactive water (two of them are in hospital for treatment). This brings back the memory of the heroes of Chernobyl, the workers that sacrificed their own lives to keep their fellow human beings as safe as possible. Let's pray they are the last martyrs of such a disaster.

I think of cards -postcards and greeting cards- as small, portable posters. It's a great format for an artist to showcase his work and for us to easily obtain, enjoy and offer it. The beautiful cards I found in Oblique validate my opinion. The Venus de Milo above (inspired from one of the most appraised works of ancient Greek sculpture) is an exquisite example of Oblique's art: minimal, monochromatic, modern with a classical twist, well-balanced. I found several great things while perusing CAMcGuire's store. I first discovered her through her great Dear John letter card (which you can see in my Top 10 unusual Valentine's day designs list). I couldn't help noticing some real gems in her vintage inspired style.
First, this absolutely great photograph with a detail from a cracked mirror of an abandoned truck. I love this photo. I love the balanced frame, the cracks, the rusty metal, the sense of the past, of human absence and of a whole life passing through the stuff we own and use. It's one of these rare posters that tell stories.

Not a bad deal, especially considering that she is made only of black lines on a black and red background. What perplexes me -and makes it more interesting- is that the artist (the talented Jean Zapata) named it vanitas, which is an artistic shorthand for the meaninglessness of earthly life and vanity.

This is a one-of-a kind mixture of science imagery and humorous approach to Christianity by the hands (and the brains!) of Kyle Finchingmate, a chemist with quite a few artistic ideas.

Today's find is a delicious canvas tote bag that features an ink-drawing of an erupting volcano, skillfully done by Artberry. Lava, ashes, molten rock (plus, some trees and a small house that have every reason to worry!), all in eye-catching red vividness. The eruption of Eyjafjallajokull inspired this artwork and it really conveys the force of nature at play, while maintaining it's pop art qualities. Great job!

This may well be the weirdest t-shirt I've seen. Watch the surreality levels rise: a man with an orchid for a head meditates in a lotus position while levitating above a carpet. Exquisite eccentricity from a true master, J. Riddle of Gallery Bizarre. Nothing stops his imagination from running wild with dreams and nightmares, using sketches, paintings or mixed media. This store is hot!

A pretty face, serious and intense. Most probably, belonging to a woman who paid Charon's fare a long time ago. On a dark, solemn background.
What on earth made TnM Past Perfect's MarShelle to make an iPad case out of this one? I may never find the answer but I tell you this, folks: I love it! It's dark, it's beautiful, it's weird and reminds me of yesteryear's séances. This case will enshroud your precious gadget with a gothic aura and her eyes will leave those around you speechless.

In times of increased political hoopla it's very common to see countless designs featuring the faces and/or names of politicians. Most of these designs are rubbish but every now and then someone comes up with a true gem.

That's the case with this t-shirt that popifies President Barack Obama in a simple, striking manner. I've been waiting for a politically neutral time to present you with this one, and I think it captures the very mechanisms that transform a man into a cultural phenomenon. He may not prove to be as long-lasting as Che, but then again who is? (Except Elvis, Mickey Mouse and Lenin, of course!)

Kudos to Chris Jackson (you'll find this t-shirt on his Siegeworks store) for taking the spirit of the times and adding some glitter to it!

The first message is quite obvious: in case of mugging you'll have to let go or else you'll end up like the stick figure.
