Hand-drawn Head

The Head is an exquisite animated short film, made out of solid craftsmanship and surreal imagination. Watch the weird adventures of it's hero, a huge robot-like creature that absorbs things in his head, and admire the talents of the Argentine artists Matias Vigliano, Dante Zaballa and Ariel Gandolfo -art direction, animation and sound design, respectively.

I consider my roots to be graphic design with an unexpected, somehow surreal, touch. That's exactly where I am with this newest creation, the Quack design. Based on an old optometry drawing of an eye, it transforms this to duck's head.

In most cases, it's available in both transparent (the medium's material shows through) or a cardboard-textured background. I do believe that each has it's own charm.

Oh, the hipness of it all...!

Now, where does one start to describe this unbelievable design? For once I'm at a loss for words, so I'll just quote the words of it's creator:

A part-man part-dog hipster. His green singlet like shirt features a double rainbow and the words "What does it mean?". Over the top of his turned up stovepipe blue jeans, he has a pink tutu like skirt. Under one arm is the mounted head of a white unicorn. He also has on a pair of yellow diving flippers and a pair of thick rimmed glasses.

Can you picture someone writing these words straight-faced? It seems that Lee Leplaw Deichmann, the artist behind the great Lee Lee and the Bee store, has tons of weird humor. It's not just the awe-inspiring surreality of this postcard. There are plenty of other unique designs to prove my point:

Imagine shopping around with this bag (aptly named Shrunken Head Dilemma). I do. Things like that change lives, folks! Lee's imagination and talent is one of a kind.

Lucha libre

Lucha libre is Spanish for free wrestling -a sport much adored in Mexico. Mexican luchadores provide a truly sensational show, based on their agility and their talent at performing astonishing aerial moves. Most luchadores are masked (a tradition that may have come down all the way from the Aztecs).
The mask of a menacing luchador is the basis for this powerful design from 21gunsalute, a store full of stylish, urban coolness.
I love the one-colored simplicity and, most of all, the angle of this side profile. This is a seriously great t-shirt and you really don't need to know anything about Lucha libre to appreciate it's modernity.

Intense colors and liquid forms are characteristic of the work of Talisbird, an alternative digital artist from Tasmania. The kaleidoscopic surreality of his Cock flies hill design is astonishing. Elements of fractal art conspire to tell a fascinating story and show a talent that goes beyond what you might expect when you hear the term "fractal art". I like the head-thing that looks at the determined rooster in this poster.

What a delicious skateboard! The effect of the wood showing through in front of the eyes gives a surreal, superhero look on this design. Great work from a small gallery named Area 32. Not many things to chose from, but they have a cool taste for skateboards.

I've found the definitive place for all things cranium! The ultimate skull-depicting gallery of Skullaby's Skull Solutions specializes in great designs based on -what else?- skulls. Mind you, I'm not talking about your average "bone structure that keeps our brain in one piece" boring stuff, either. Instead, we find imaginative and artful creations, ranging from black and white unique skulls (like the great Gearhead above) to funny, cartoony, goth or rocking stylized ones.

Nothing lazy in the unique, mega-cool artwork that can be found at this store. Strictly shirts (though I'd love to see some if these designs in print) and full of surreal themes and ideas. Definitely one of my favorite places on the interwebs.
