This is a journey to the best designs in the world of Zazzle.com. Handpicked and presented (along with my own artwork) by yours truly, the driving force behind Surreality designs. We'll discover great artists and special products -mostly with a taste for the eccentric. Dead Mickey on board

Dead Mouse skateboard
Summer. The perfect time for blissful afternoon skating. The laughing skeleton of a very famous mouse wearing the distinct clothes: the perfect design for a surreal (and slightly dark) skateboard.

This weird concept of a dead Mickey Mouse came from Evilive Produkts, Juan Pollo's creative outlet for interesting, imaginative gifts and products. You'll like what you'll find there!
If you speak Spanish you'll probably appreciate his Porn-O-Graffix blog, too. Me, I could only enjoy the design and the music.

Skeletons wanted

Simple, bold colors, strong forms and a great idea: this is one of the best tote bags I've seen! This creepy skeleton is wanted -no need to add "dead or alive", is there?- and Maggie, from Zazzle Holidays, created a winner in this seriously wanted canvas bag. I've discovered it amongst this shop's countless holiday designs.

Hey, dickhead!

A rockin', crazy and hilarious character decorates today's featured skateboard! It's one of the true gems you'll find in Dickcherry's store, created by an artist whose artwork and illustrations help form the current zeitgeist. His work has been used by Pixar, Tinsley Studios and countless rock musicians. Browse his store and you'll know why: his imagination runs amok, powered by his great talent.

Dickcherry's use of color is impressive but I fell in love with this black and white poster. Check him out and I'm sure you too will find something to get excited about!

Strolling skull

A strange skeleton-like creature, wearing a top hat, boots and something that resembles a tuxedo, strolls through this marvelously weird raglan shirt. This design, originally an ink drawing on watercolor paper, is one of the humorous dark characters of Chaos the Red, a store with horror and fantasy artwork -often funny, in their own way. Great shirt!

Mutant ideas

Attention to detail, exquisite craftsmanship and, most of all, the ability to transform the political into art makes Emek one of the most talented artists around. I love this surreal corn fish (a design against genetically modified food) and his incredible phonoskull, but his store is full of equally amazing artwork.
Emek has worked with Radiohead, Tool, System of a Dawn, Neil Young and Henry Rollins (amongst many others), has been interviewed and featured countless times and i"m almost ashamed that I just descovered about his artsproject/zazzle store.

His strong, smart imagery can get addictive! Take a look at his store and then go check his site, www.emek.net, for his fabulous poster work which -alas!- is not offered in his zazzle shop.

Skating lesson on war

You could not expect a generic, run-of-the-mill skate deck from an unconventional artist like Erla Maria. She's wild and likes to play with strange imagery. War kid is compelling -and I do believe it's yoyoing days are over. This kid's open skull left a strong impression on mine. Not for the squeamish...

Tiltilating

This is a really neat design that makes for a unique skateboard. Behold an exquisite King, based on player cards tradition (he seems to be the King of Spades, even though he is red), riding a bicycle, of all things!
I found this stylish deck on Brand New Intention, alongside other great designs, and it sure caught my surreality-seeking eye. It's a collaboration with artist Bucky Lastard, a really talented guy with an interesting blog -and a name to remember!

The raven and the kraken

There is a Poe-ish charm in this strange design, that I find irresistible. A raven plays a old Victrola phonograph producing ghosts, skulls and hearts (the tell-tale kind, I presume!). This is just a small taste of what is available at the Crankcase shop,  the place where Mark Beagle offers his art on t-shirts and hoodies. His work consists of a unique blend of modern and vintage elements, backed up by strong and surreal concepts.
The "Don't wake the Kraken" is another one of my favorites -I can't resist this mixture of maritime beasties and piracy coolness! Mark combines humor, horror themes and weird Victorian imagery in a way that captures your imagination and makes you smile. Kudos, Mr.Beagle!

Naked truth

I'm revisiting illustration art once again, with this strong ink design by Jeff Hulligan. His work is intense and bold, especially in this anti-war creation that reminds me of the great Hugo Pratt. I love the way the soldier's figure disappears in the shadow and the darkness around his skull-face. Jeff's ability in black and white is great but his color work is of no lesser merit. Look at the following nude:
Such an expressive sketch... the look, the face, the elbow, the collage background! You would really enjoy taking a look at J.Hulligan's gallery. His artistic abilities are stunning and his choice of themes delightful and intriguing. I know I'll keep an eye on him in the future.

Skulls-a-plenty

I've found the definitive place for all things cranium! The ultimate skull-depicting gallery of Skullaby's Skull Solutions specializes in great designs based on -what else?- skulls. Mind you, I'm not talking about your average "bone structure that keeps our brain in one piece" boring stuff, either. Instead, we find imaginative and artful creations, ranging from black and white unique skulls (like the great Gearhead above) to funny, cartoony, goth or rocking stylized ones.

A special mention should be made to these great, colorful designs based on the Mexican Day of the Dead tradition with a modern, edgy touch. If you're interested in what lies behind a pretty face , here's the place to find out in the most interesting way!

Skulled

A reminder of mortality and the otiosity (ooh, my! what a word!) of life, skulls have always been part of art and design and they are definitely glorified in t-shirts. Sometimes we see them highly stylized in a graffiti style and sometimes in their old-fashioned, hand-drawn beauty. Enter Skulls of Five, this sketched company of five skulls, offered by Maggie02. They’re artful and not morbid at all. In fact, I get the feeling that the front two have a friendly discussion. The ringer t-shirt suits those fellows just fine –straight, no colors to ruin the mood, no unnecessary extravaganza.

Maggie02 has an interesting store with designs for all occasions but I lingered on this one, even though it’s not typical of her work. But then, that is exactly what makes this blog tic: the fascination with the non-typical!

PS: What on earth could the three skulls on the back be looking at?
