Dead Mickey on board

Dead Mouse skateboard
Summer. The perfect time for blissful afternoon skating. The laughing skeleton of a very famous mouse wearing the distinct clothes: the perfect design for a surreal (and slightly dark) skateboard.

This weird concept of a dead Mickey Mouse came from Evilive Produkts, Juan Pollo's creative outlet for interesting, imaginative gifts and products. You'll like what you'll find there!
If you speak Spanish you'll probably appreciate his Porn-O-Graffix blog, too. Me, I could only enjoy the design and the music.

Beautifully strange iPhone cases

Welcome to the paradoxical world of an extremely talented artist, a world blessed by strange totems, where death figures roam and religious symbols are transformed into strange heroes. It's the world of Chris Parks and his outstanding Pale Horse store. The small, modern format of the iPhone case is enough to showcase his offbeat ideas and his supreme technique.
The skull-faced, kimono-wearing Dead Geisha is a fine example of his line work and his imagination.

The impressive luchador Christos Mysterio Jr. gives a small taste of how his designs turn out when he uses color: striking yet balanced! I love the way he uses well-known cultural symbols to create new, strange concepts and images. This store is one of a kind!

The Tarot phone

This expressionistic ink drawing is an almost nightmarish version of tarot's Hanged Man card. Placed brilliantly in an iPhone 4 case, seems to tell a story of life and death. The skeletal figure is affecting and dramatic. The artist is Fabio Sanna, a graphic designer and illustrator, whose bold and vivid style has a dark undertone that suits my taste!

Grim Reaper, upgraded

Reaper 3.0 shirt

With strange aeons even death may get up-to-date. Shaz Justice sees to it and offers this ringer shirt with a darkly humorous cartoon of a new and improved Charon. The design belongs to her "Lighter side of Dark" series: gothic art that doesn't take itself too seriously and brings a smile to your face.
Her characters range from cute to hilarious -or both, as this Reaper 3.0 comes to prove. I just love his golden scull necklace, and I can't help but noticing the downsizing that took place, considering that the traditional Reaper was depicted as much taller. It looks like Death jumped on the "efficiency and sustainability" bandwagon!

Killville city limits

The recent Bad Taste post left me thinking about the dark and grisly side of life -and death. A side traveled by some strange, interesting folks that create art that's not easily accepted by the masses. The Surreality Watch believes that masses can be very bland and celebrates great artwork such as this bold poster found at Killville.

Angry Johnny, the artist behind Killville, draws feverish, violent and darkly humorous tales of murder, insanity, loneliness and pain. And he does it astonishingly well!

Vita brevis

This beautiful, moody piece brings a new vigor to the ancient memento mori tradition -that is, artwork that reminds us of mortality and inspires us to have a more serious approach to our life and choices. The strange female figure seems to float while holding a skull and the light is simply amazing!
I found this great poster at Aegis Strife, the shop that showcases the art of Mario Sánchez Nevado (aka Aégis). Mario is a master of strong symbolism, grotesque concepts and exquisite skill.

Mixed techniques, rich textures and a splendid sense of color and light source make him a unique artist and illustrator. So don't be shy and cover your walls with his surreal imaginings: life's too short to resist such an eerie temptation!

Skating lesson on war

You could not expect a generic, run-of-the-mill skate deck from an unconventional artist like Erla Maria. She's wild and likes to play with strange imagery. War kid is compelling -and I do believe it's yoyoing days are over. This kid's open skull left a strong impression on mine. Not for the squeamish...

Songs from deep down

Fly shirt

What happens when you take cartoon forms and you start tweaking the cuteness factor until the distorted outcome expresses your feelings about death, love, loneliness and sadness?
Well, if you have the rare talent of Justin Aerni, the outcome is this vibrant, raw, emotional, gripping art that leaves people with their mouth open!
The term "cartoon surrealism" comes to mind. But, like any other term, it's just words and doesn't begin to describe the strength of Justin's work. I'm very happy I found about him and I'm very proud to present the beautiful nightmares that adorn the t-shirts in his shop.
What gets me every time is the colorful palette that seems to contradict his themes. This contradiction adds to the charm of his great artwork. Don't miss on this one, people, or you'll be doomed to stay imprisoned in a world of mediocre, syrupy kawaii nonsense, the kind that floods the apparel market.

Death mill

Even Don Quixote would find it a tough deal to attack this ominous mill. An otherworldly sense of doom prevails in this gloomy design by MDKgraphics.  This is no surprise, since the gallery's designs have a tendency to picture the dark side. UFO's, aliens, horror, dark fantasy, fetish are the main thing here -often with a humorous touch.

Abductions can be funny (at least if you're not the poor, surprised pig in this card) but the Canadian artist that lurks behind MDKgraphics is at his best when portraying the paranormal. Did I mention that Surreality Watch loves the paranormal? If you do too -and otherwise you wouldn't be reading this- have a closer look at his work.

Skulled

A reminder of mortality and the otiosity (ooh, my! what a word!) of life, skulls have always been part of art and design and they are definitely glorified in t-shirts. Sometimes we see them highly stylized in a graffiti style and sometimes in their old-fashioned, hand-drawn beauty. Enter Skulls of Five, this sketched company of five skulls, offered by Maggie02. They’re artful and not morbid at all. In fact, I get the feeling that the front two have a friendly discussion. The ringer t-shirt suits those fellows just fine –straight, no colors to ruin the mood, no unnecessary extravaganza.

Maggie02 has an interesting store with designs for all occasions but I lingered on this one, even though it’s not typical of her work. But then, that is exactly what makes this blog tic: the fascination with the non-typical!

PS: What on earth could the three skulls on the back be looking at?
