This is a photograph that traveled through time -all the way from the roaring '20s- to end up on this greeting card from Kathleen MLowe. Kathleen finds hidden gems of yesteryear, like this dancer from Ziegfeld Follies. A haunting pose, a beautiful woman with a sad face, fine elbows and exquisite legs. I guess it would be considered too risqué back in the days. Now, it's a stylish memento of the beauty of a long gone era with just the right gothic undertone.

Every time you take a sip from this mug this voluptuous comic book beauty will be watching you. Not a bad deal, especially considering that she is made only of black lines on a black and red background. What perplexes me -and makes it more interesting- is that the artist (the talented Jean Zapata) named it vanitas, which is an artistic shorthand for the meaninglessness of earthly life and vanity.
So, what we have here is a killer brunette as a symbol of the certainty of death... Not a bad combination of elements, don't you think?

A pretty face, serious and intense. Most probably, belonging to a woman who paid Charon's fare a long time ago. On a dark, solemn background.
What on earth made TnM Past Perfect's MarShelle to make an iPad case out of this one? I may never find the answer but I tell you this, folks: I love it! It's dark, it's beautiful, it's weird and reminds me of yesteryear's séances. This case will enshroud your precious gadget with a gothic aura and her eyes will leave those around you speechless.

In this poster I see an attractive combination of folk art and Greek-Orthodox iconography (the flat background, the stylized muscles and golden elements are some of the characteristics of Byzantine religious art). Yet, instead of the introversion and the austerity of forms there is so much sweetness expressed in the lady's face and the bird!
Madonna, female deity or an expression of femininity? It doesn't matter... What matters is the quiet beauty of this painting made and offered by Lynnette Shelley, a great painter and illustrator from Philadelphia. Her rich, imaginative colors and shapes are outstanding.

The silhouette of a sexy, swimsuit-wearing lady and typography in pink seem to clash with a call to action and fighting. That's what I thought and that's how this idea came to life. The lady's pose is a classic old-school model's posture, yet the silhouetted raised fist can be viewed as the symbol of protest and uprising.
The woman inclines on huge, pink letters but they spell "fight" and their grungy texture is far from pristine.

This is a strangely fascinating postcard, featuring ink work from Noumeda. The birds and the running woman give a dreamy, haunting quality to the landscape. Noumeda Carbone's work is mostly monochromatic with small touches of color that explode in surreal ways. Do have a look at her illustrations (shown in her great website as well as her store). She is one of the best, with a strong feminine aura that is both enchanting and unexpected.
As for me, I'll keep staring at those eyes, trying to hear the story they tell:

How come this vibrant painting of a young girl with an umbrella walking on the streets of Dublin reminds me so much of summer? Well, I guess it's the colors. This explosion of warm, glorious colors balancing with the subtler, cooler hues that transform the image into a dreamy walk towards the seaside.
This is an exquisite poster from Nerosunero, the store that showcases the great work of Mario Sughi -an Italian illustrator living in Dublin.

His vivid style is said to bring back memories of David Hockney but I think (looking at the sexy "Dancing" poster) that there is a trace of good old Milo Manara in there, too. All this namedropping can be quite unfair: Mario's artwork conveys a unique flavor and his good-looking people and psychedelic landscapes form his own, distinctive universe. An enchanting, sensual universe that gets richer by a hidden sadness and a nostalgic touch. That's the material life -and summers- are made of!

July is here and I just found a t-shirt that conveys a dreamlike, summer feeling. It's a bunny dreaming about floating in a donut (yep, we keep it surreal enough for you!), the colors are great, the camera angle is delicious and the idea is made to have you smiling all summer long!
The artist is Max Estes, and the design is from his My life as a Bunny product line.

As you can see his talent makes things seem simple but his art is far from it. His work is solidly based on great sense of colors and a fine balance of forms. Most of all, it makes my eyes happy and gives my mind space to breath. Kudos, Max!

This old-school design, with it's '70s flair, leaves a taste of Virgin Suicides in my mouth.I like the details of the hair flowing about and, most of all, I like the red glasses and the fine combination of red and green (not the most easy trick to pull, mind you!). She takes images from the past (I love her silent movie references! - Theda Bara, anyone?) and combines them so they provoke a rich, enchanting and unsettling mood. She creates surreality out of stuff that others would see only as picturesque (in the expected ways often found in goth culture).
I do like those cards, but there are plenty other products -and many great designs- to chose from.

What a postcard! This design amazes me. It manages to be surreal, humorous, tender and gorgeous at the same time. Seems based in the finest tradition of graphic design (some '40s and '50s styles come to mind) and I do wish you have friends who will appreciate receiving such a work of art.
The artist is Belinha Fernandes from Portugal, her store is named Papelustro and everyone crazy enough to follow this blog will be more than happy to go there and take a look!

I'm revisiting illustration art once again, with this strong ink design by Jeff Hulligan. His work is intense and bold, especially in this anti-war creation that reminds me of the great Hugo Pratt. I love the way the soldier's figure disappears in the shadow and the darkness around his skull-face. Jeff's ability in black and white is great but his color work is of no lesser merit.
