This is a journey to the best designs in the world of Zazzle.com. Handpicked and presented (along with my own artwork) by yours truly, the driving force behind Surreality designs. We'll discover great artists and special products -mostly with a taste for the eccentric. But let us not confine ourselves in specific genres: the possibilities are endless and so is the great art one can find at Zazzle.

The bird bag

You don't have to be a birdwatcher to appreciate this tote bag with the pretty, intricate ink drawing of birds on a tree. I like the subdued, sepia color and the fine details of this design.
I found it in Country Garden,  a store dedicated to nature and country cottage gardens, with a wide variety of serene watercolors and drawings. What does serenity have to do with Surreality Watch, you might ask. Well, we all have to catch our breath every once in a while, don't we? And Cathie Richardson's work is like an open window: it lets the fresh air in!

A saint's graceful dance

This is my latest vector-based design, the silhouette of a saint with the grace of a dancer and a bird perching on his hand. I hope it conveys an easy, fluid feeling. The kind I would expect someone who has achieved a unique level of balance and stability to radiate.

As for me, I'm rather proud of the balance of the design -it didn't come easy. I was thinking of a relaxed kind of power, as opposed to the destructive kind we are used to. I'm not sure this is religious. It could be, in a subtle, non-dogmatic sort of way.
As always, it is for sale on a great variety of products under the Saints Dancing category of my zazzle store.

Season's darkness

The yellow bird may sing for joy and peace on Earth, but the overall feeling of this Christmas card is miles away from the usual splurge. It doesn't make you uneasy (at least not me!) but this weird collage makes a darker, ironic statement about holidays. Plus, the design is absolutely great.

The next card is more abstract -and equally amazing. Seasonal or not, the art you'll find at PhDilettante Designs is unusual and striking, with a touch of dadaism to spice things up.

Message to the goddess

In this poster I see an attractive combination of folk art and Greek-Orthodox iconography (the flat background, the stylized muscles and golden elements are some of the characteristics of Byzantine religious art). Yet, instead of the introversion and the austerity of forms there is so much sweetness expressed in the lady's face and the bird!
Madonna, female deity or an expression of femininity? It doesn't matter... What matters is the quiet beauty of this painting made and offered by Lynnette Shelley, a great painter and illustrator from Philadelphia. Her rich, imaginative colors and shapes are outstanding.

Warm nonsense

Travelling Light card

I see this bird (is it a seagull?) flying on a cloudless sky and I get a warm feeling inside. Outside roars the winter, but the bird on the card belongs to a different plane. A plane created by Dewk and Dazy,  the creative minds of Double Exhibition, a store with a keen eye for strange collages.

Dada and absurdism (plus a surreal kind of tender, subterranean humour) permeate their work and surprises the mind. I'm glad to have found them and we'll be seeing more unusual stuff from the loose "association" they are allied to: a bunch of talented dadaist minds that constitute one of the most creative niches of the Zazzle ecosystem!

Punk mail

Do you remember snail mail? Well, you should, because there is nothing like the feeling you get when receiving a letter. It's instant proof that someone likes you enough to actually spend some time and effort writing and sending it. Plus, if the envelope is something like this crazy punk bird (complete with the dark eyeglasses, mohawk, boots and all!) you're off to a smiling day!
I found this gem in Edition Handdruck and the artwork was made by Martin Stankewitz. The glorious doodling in the text balloon is customizable so you can put your name and address. Let the bird carry your message to your loved ones!

[Martin is a draughtsman and artist printer specializing in monotype prints. His squidoo lense on monotype printing is very interesting and informative. A really great place to start learning about monotypes, full of valuable resources and advice from this experienced artist.]

Strange kind of beauty

This is a strangely fascinating postcard, featuring ink work from Noumeda. The birds and the running woman give a dreamy, haunting quality to the landscape. Noumeda Carbone's work is mostly monochromatic with small touches of color that explode in surreal ways. Do have a look at her illustrations (shown in her great website as well as her store). She is one of the best, with a strong feminine aura that is both enchanting and unexpected.
As for me, I'll keep staring at those eyes, trying to hear the story they tell:

The bird and the mummy

This t-shirt by Amrendra (created by Saksham, an artist from India) feels like a breath of fresh air. It's imaginative and tender -in a strange sort of way! I particularly like the origami birds offered by the silhouetted vendor. This store offers many unusual designs.
Another favorite is this sexy mummy. Unique and inventive in just one color. Great t-shirts for people with good taste!

Attack of the Burramundi

Look at these little devils descending like a squadron of Stukas on your desk! They are the fabulous Burramundi (though they look like cute flying piranhas to me) made by artist Kerry One, and they look great indeed. Nothing's better than a flock of awesome, colorful... somethings on a blue sky to cheer you up.

Blue calm

Nothing extravagant, odd or weird, today. Just a tender, calm and happy design on a coffee mug. Yes, even the Surreality Watchman needs some serenity, especially during his morning coffee. This bluebird is eye-soothing (not to mention eye-catching!) and I found it in Pencil + Wonderland, a gallery full of funny cartoon animals. Simple lines and fairytales sometimes combine to form a powerful mixture. This could prove to be your lucky mug.
