Watchman's Note

This is a journey to the best designs in the world of Zazzle.com. Handpicked and presented (along with my own artwork) by yours truly, the driving force behind Surreality designs. We'll discover great artists and special products -mostly with a taste for the eccentric. But let us not confine ourselves in specific genres: the possibilities are endless and so is the great art one can find at Zazzle.

Ground control to Major Tom

We've lost the signal connecting us with the astronaut designed on this Doodle Speaker and the effect is cool yet, somehow, eerie. I like the TV bars on the helmet's face and the subdued colors on this fine design by 785Tees, a store with a wide variety of great concepts on tees, prints and other goodies!

Mona Lisa de los muertes

Well designed cultural mash-up: Mona Lisa, propaganda poster style, the Mexican Dia de los Muertes, plus a hint of the kind of artwork Deadheads love (sorry for the pun: I was thinking about Grateful Dead fans!).
Great postcard from kBill TV, a store with novelty items that take a step beyond the usual!

If La Muerta Lisa is not proof enough, well, maybe this stoner Jack will convince you about kBill's strange sense of humor!

Fetish and romance

It seems that, in the hands of the right artist, bondage, duct tape and true love can find a common ground! This ingenious card plays with the black forms and produces a sexy effect. You don't have to be a latex fan to appreciate this great design but if you are a kinky love aficionado, you'll find tasteful, unexpected treasures in the Pollock Path store.
They say they are a little borderline and not your average zazzle store. They are absolutely right. This -and a good deal of talent- earns them a place in the heart of Surreality Watch!

Paper owls

These sweet paper owls perching on a tree are deliciously old-school! You have to love the craftsmanship on this paper art design that brings a fairytale mood to a simple postcard.
I found it on Simplistic Irony, a store where many more happy creatures dwell (well, some of them are people or zombies, but that makes it even more interesting, doesn't it?).

Coffee-loving killer mammals

I couldn't help but laugh when I saw this poster. This angry killer bunny means business -and I must admit that's how I feel every morning when I wake up! Coffee addicts of the world, unite and grab the print with the pissed off character right now. You'll find it on Kenn Wislander's store, alongside many cartoon characters (like the notorious Pink-eyed Panda!).

Beautifully strange iPhone cases

Welcome to the paradoxical world of an extremely talented artist, a world blessed by strange totems, where death figures roam and religious symbols are transformed into strange heroes. It's the world of Chris Parks and his outstanding Pale Horse store. The small, modern format of the iPhone case is enough to showcase his offbeat ideas and his supreme technique.
The skull-faced, kimono-wearing Dead Geisha is a fine example of his line work and his imagination.

The impressive luchador Christos Mysterio Jr. gives a small taste of how his designs turn out when he uses color: striking yet balanced! I love the way he uses well-known cultural symbols to create new, strange concepts and images. This store is one of a kind!

Sick nostalgia

Is this Norman Rockwell on LSD? A 50s propaganda artist trying his hand on being cute? Cold War's latest trend?
I don't really know... What I do know is that it's strange, funny, surreal and kitschy and I want one right away! I found it in Curious Goods, a store full of strange ephemera and unusual nostalgic pieces. I'll be coming back for a closer look, since they offer a gazillion amazing designs thought lost in the annals of time!

Screaming flowers suit

It's about time for an utterly wacko poster -and I guess you know by now I mean this as a compliment! This great piece by D.Silva Designs is both creepy, funny and surreal. They say the devil's in the details and in this case the detail of those little screaming heads that hang out of the flowers is unbeatable!

Here's something more from this great artist:

He doesn't limit himself in one style or medium and his solid technique is as flexible as his imagination. Check out his store and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Zazzle launching custom speakers

This is great news and I can't wait to see the designs created for the tiny but effective and beautiful Doodle speakers!
Zazzle has announced that they'll launch the speakers in about 17 days. You may find more about this in the Doodle Speakers launch page and you may download the template for the designs here.

Abstract freedom

Here is a powerful, intense print in the best abstract expressionist tradition. I love the forms and the overall feeling, especially the bold, high contrast -although there are color version to chose from.
The artist is Omar Sangiovanni of Sangi Design, and I honestly believe he is offering some great artwork.  Go check him out, his prints will shine on any surface!
