Santa goes to war
Extreme times give birth to extreme measures -and weird propaganda. This poster's Santa wears a helmet and an army outfit and carries a rifle. His gift in War World I times was weaponry for the soldiers fighting the most devastating war the world had known.
This vintage print (picturing one of the strangest "Ho, ho, ho" situations I've seen) is found at BurbanKPilot, the store of photographer Ron Irwin. It's a great illustration that captures the spirit of wartime holidays.

Strange dolls, indeed!
Here is Dr. Scops, a rather creepy fellow drenched in surreality. I wouldn't try to describe him. There are things that evade description, things so strange and unusual that one has to simply experience.
I can tell you this:
This creature is a doll made by Beth Robinson, a true master of doll making, whose imagination spawns weird characters and whose talent transforms them to great paintings, dolls and photographs. Her creations range from eerily tender to outright scary. Have a look in Beth's Strange Dolls zazzle shop and I bet you'll get hooked and will want to visit her fantastic website too. Who knows, you may end up commissioning something -maybe Dr. Scops's mistress...

Combat fatigue
Talking about grisly death: these tired and shocked eyes have seen more than anyone should have to put up with. This drawing does not serve fiction. It is a great poster with a painting drawn by William A. Foley Jr, a World War II veteran and renowned artist, whose craftsmanship gives a narrative of life on the front lines.
It's not often you see such a moving, expressive portrait. I do hope that the soldier depicted made it home and found someone to soothe away this heartbreaking glance. It's not just a work of art, it's a snapshot of mankind's painful march through destruction. Find out more about Mr.Foley and discover his work in his Visions from a Foxhole store. Such an artful documentary should not be missed.

Life reused
Reinventing. reusing, combining fragments to form a new, meaningful whole is an enchanting process. I have a soft spot for artwork that finds exciting ways to deal with the past and the mundane. This poster - a collage created from found objects- by Akayo was an instant favorite.
You don't need big surfaces to get a wonderful piece of art. Akayo's talent impresses even in the tiniest format of this fine pin button. His sense of colors and the graffiti character and slogan is delicious! From stickers to city walls, from galleries to skateboards: this artist from San Francisco Bay Area knows no boundaries.

Dualities
I admire the beauty and elegance of this print from Diftype store. It's rich in details and textures yet minimalistic. The artist is Niklas Lundberg, a graphic designer from Sweden. He is a very talented guy who excels in abstracts.
I find his way of balancing and deconstructing circles particularly interesting. I also enjoy his philosophical inspirations and his effort on giving form to abstract thought. Beautiful artwork, indeed!

A strange roller coaster
Every time I take a look at Aurélien Police's shop I'm left speechless and awestruck. This great French artist has a way of mixing scifi, fantasy, cuberpunk, gothic and symbolism that transcends the norms. There is always a story to be told through his art, a small detail that takes all this eye-candy and gives it a profound dimension. Look at the center of this gloomy poster: see the wagons falling?
This ominous postcard has it's secrets, too. The decrepit interchange is a strong image but what sets it apart is the rope hanging above the highway. It hints of human despair, madness and solitude. It oozes humanity! That's what sets Aurélien apart and makes me come back to his work again and again. I'm sure you will feel the same way once you look deeper.

Vita brevis
This beautiful, moody piece brings a new vigor to the ancient memento mori tradition -that is, artwork that reminds us of mortality and inspires us to have a more serious approach to our life and choices. The strange female figure seems to float while holding a skull and the light is simply amazing!
I found this great poster at Aegis Strife, the shop that showcases the art of Mario Sánchez Nevado (aka Aégis). Mario is a master of strong symbolism, grotesque concepts and exquisite skill.
Mixed techniques, rich textures and a splendid sense of color and light source make him a unique artist and illustrator. So don't be shy and cover your walls with his surreal imaginings: life's too short to resist such an eerie temptation!

Flying over New Babbage
New Babbage, the magnificent steampunk city in Second Life is the place where steampunk-minded people from around the world gather to roleplay and create imaginative technology extravaganzas. This fine poster celebrates the city's second annual Airship Regatta that took place at the beginning of 2010. It's a great souvenir from the real life surrealism of having strange and unique worlds to explore (and, in a way, to inhabit) right at your fingertips. Plus, who doesn't love airships?!

Redesigning the webs
I felt the need for some solid and inventive graphic design, something that could balance neat typography and clean looks with gritty, biting passion.I found it in retrofuturs, a store with splendid posters and t-shirts. The first thing that caught my eye is this 404 error design. I'm interested in visualizing internet standards and error codes (some of you may remember my own endeavors on Real Error 403) and this one is a true work of art!
Then I saw those great web service designs and I got hooked. Great ideas, weird imagery and craftsmanship characterize all retrofuturs work.

The game tightens
Great artwork here, by the multitalented Jim Mahfood and his 40oz store. A bold illustration, with a boxer as the main character, that showcases his comic book experiences. I love the lines and the color combination. Jim's work is tense and vibrant and you should really check his great blog , too -many fine sketches to be found there.

Losing the one
Here is a simple, effective idea that conveys much: love, loss, irony,sadness and a wicked sense of humor. It's a fine poster from Joe Iurato, an artist with a talent for expressive stencil and spray work. I'm sure that a great sci-fi short story is hidden inside this image waiting to be put to words. Strong and inspiring stuff!

Dinamo Futurista
Youth, speed, technology, power, change and violence were the key words of Futurism, an artistic and social movement that swept Italy in the beginning of the 20th century. It's founder and powertrain was the writer Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, whose influence is celebrated in this magnificent print by artist and designer Simone Poletti. You'll find it in his DINAMO store, alongside many great designs (mostly futuristic-inspired).
Strong work, full of dynamism, that gives a modern look an the style that sculpted the work of such diverse people as Sant'Elia, Mayakovsky, Malevitch and Tsukamoto (not to mention the cyberpunk movement!).
[Many Italian futurists, including Marinetti himself, were supporters of fascism. This stance, however, did not characterize the whole movement and it certainly doesn't apply to non-Italian Futurists. The irony was that Fascism finally decided -just like Russian Communism did- that modern art was degenerate, and the life and work of all kinds of futurists and modern artists would come to suffer.]

House of nightmares
Today's selection is dark, intense and -definitely- surreal. Behold the art of Kirsten Brown, owner of the Serpent and Angel store: a house of horrors and nightmares. It's weird rooms present a mosaic of fear and desperation (plus a well-placed H.P.Lovecraft reference) in a great composition.
Does the stairway lead to an exit from this doomed place? I'm not sure. All I can say is that this is a seriously compelling poster. It reminds me of the classic Clive Barker words about everyone being a book of blood.

Rhino loose in the city
A fictional action movie deserves a promotional poster, too. "There's a rhino loose in the city" is the greatest film you'll never watch, and the t-shirt is hilarious and absolutely awesome.Unfortunately, this orange beauty is not currently available, but there are many customizing options and many colours to choose from.
The idea behind the design comes from the legendary British sitcom, Only fools and horses, (you can watch the scene here) and is offered by Slicktees, a great place for film-related humour. Here's another one of my favorites:

What's "E" for
Well, it's quite obvious: E is for Elephant. A pop-art, polka-dotted elephant with a cute tail, found on Best Kids store. Man, do I love those colors!
Best Kids offer a great variety of designs with children in mind, but I'm not too old to rock'n'roll yet, so I decided I'm on their target group. Plus, I'm begging for their "M is for Murder" version!

Checkmate
Here is something I believe the chess lovers would appreciate: a smart infographics poster with the diagrams of 26 basic mating patterns for chess. It's not an object of beauty -though well-designed- but a study tool. Or, maybe, a way to show off your skills on the world's most favorite and respected board game.
It sits quietly in Aristotle334 shop, waiting for the keen eye of the connoiseur!

A hill that is a head
Intense colors and liquid forms are characteristic of the work of Talisbird, an alternative digital artist from Tasmania. The kaleidoscopic surreality of his Cock flies hill design is astonishing. Elements of fractal art conspire to tell a fascinating story and show a talent that goes beyond what you might expect when you hear the term "fractal art". I like the head-thing that looks at the determined rooster in this poster.
Another favorite is the Elephant Game, an intriguing and artful collage of images that give a sense of Africa and game-hunting-in an unusual and exciting lime t-shirt.

Eerie journey
This print is the work of a true storyteller. An image of epic fantasy and marvelous surrealism. It is made by Houk, an artist with a true talent for digital fairytales. I can't decide what I like more: the weird balloon or the crooked tower on the right? Or, maybe, it's the quality of light that makes this a haunting piece.

Capturing the surreal
In some artists' work, surrealism, magical realism and symbolism merge into a single language that strives to describe the world. Boundaries cease to matter and we are left with visions that transform the mundane and the figurative into strange fascinating images.
I found such images in Victoria Champion's shop, Maedusae. I especially like the deep red cloth that emerges from the camera in her Illuminating the Capture poster, and the way that she conveys the sense of creation.
What would she have to say? Maybe Interrogation of the Artist gives us a hint. The artist is not to be found on the chair -there's more urgent work to be done than answering questions. Instead, we have these great digital paintings that speak volumes about our inner mechanisms. They have cast a spell on me since I first saw them.
